Dominic Hyam: His time as a Scotland player finally arrives?

Dominic Hyam has a granite solid CV as a reliable, durable, consistent and combative centre-back, who can also turn defence into attack. He plays club football at the highest level of any centre-back in contention to play for Scotland. Yet aged 30, he has only 1 cap and 5 minutes so far to his name as a full Scotland internationalist. Is this the moment though when that durability and consistency mean that a Scotland career finally takes off for Dominic Hyam?

Dominic Hyam background

Dominic Hyam was born in Leuchars in Fife in December 1995, when his father was stationed by the RAF at the nearby airbase. Hyam’s paternal grandmother is Dundonian, and his maternal grandfather is Glaswegian. He cites his “Scotland daft” father as his greatest influence.

Dominic Hyam Scotland career

Hyam has 3 under-19 and 5 under-21 caps. In the u19s, he played in a back 3 with John Souttar and Scott McKenna. Hyam’s sole full cap to date, is when he subbed on in 91st minute injury time, under glorious Oslo sunshine in June 2023. Scotland had come back to lead 2-1 thanks to Lyndon Dykes and Kenny McLean goals in the 87th & 89th minutes. Steve Clarke replaced John McGinn with Hyam to successfully protect that lead through the remaining 5 minutes played of stoppage time.

Reading: Youth career

In November 2013 on signing his first pro-contract, the Reading website described him as:

“A key part of the resolute back-line that took our under-18s to the Premier League final last year.”

Reading lost that final to Fulham who succeeded Everton as competition winners.

That Reading F.C. article then added,

“He has always shown an eye for goal, scoring 7 goals in 26+2 appearances for our academy last season,” and. “The defender has already got on the score-sheet twice for the academy this season, including a dramatic late equaliser to set up a wonderful 2-1 win away at Arsenal.”

Reading sent Hyam on loan, initially to Hemel Hempstead Town and then Basingstoke Town. He played every minute of the 19 games he played in these loan spells; an early sign of his durability and consistency.

Perhaps somewhat surprisingly given the promise he showed, Hyam left Reading without featuring for the 1st team.

Coventry City: First team breakthrough, 2 promotions and 1st Player of the Season award

Hyam moved to Coventry City in 2016, then in the English 4th tier. He made 22 appearances that season, establishing himself in the 1st team from mid-February. He played in the 2017 league play-off semi-final win over Notts County, and the play-off final win at Wembley; 3-1 v Exeter City before a 50,196 crowd.

2 seasons later (2018-19), he and Coventry were promoted again, this time as Champions of English football’s 3rd tier. Hyam was Coventry’s player of the season.

Coventry remained in the 2nd tier for the rest of Hyam’s time there. He left after making 192 1st team appearances.

In what the Coventry Telegraph reported as a “hugely unpopular sale”, he was sold aged 26 to Blackburn Rovers for £ 2.5m plus add-ons in August 2022.

Blackburn Rovers: Another Player of the Season award and further cementing reputation as Mr Reliable

Hyam was Blackburn player of the year that 1st season there of his. The club finished on goal difference one place below the 6th place, last of the play-off positions. They also eliminated top tier Leicester City en-route to the FA Cup quarter finals.

In 2024-25, Hyam and Rovers again finished 7th in the English 2nd tier. They missed out on the play-offs again by 1 place, by drawing 1-1 at Sheffield United in their last game of the season. United finished 3rd in the table. Hyam played every minute of all 46 games played by Blackburn Rovers in that season’s league campaign.

Hyam stated in an interview with the Rovers website:

“I’ve had a bit of luck with injuries. I know they are part of the game and I’ll get injuries in the future, but availability and consistency is what I’ve always based my game on. You have to take care of your body and that’s something I’ve stepped up with and taken a lot more seriously in 2024-25. Without doing that, I don’t think I’d have played as many games.”

In September 2025, Hyam for the 2nd time in his career was the commodity in a sale that the selling club’s fans made it clear they didn’t want. The fee was reported at £ 2.7m.  “The 72” website stated, “Blackburn Rovers have left themselves in a seriously precarious position by accepting a last-gasp Wrexham bid for Hyam.”

Wrexham: Turning the team around from relegation threat to promotion contenders

Wrexham were languishing in relegation spot 21st place with 4 points from a possible 15. From Hyam’s debut, they’ve moved up the table to currently place 6th for what would be a play-off spot if they can maintain that until the end of the season. He has an average rating for Wrexham in the league of 7.1 on Flashscore. He caught the eye in the televised FA Cup win over top division Nottingham Forest, scoring with a thumping header. Widely praised since joining, Hyam is also now captain at Wrexham.

Is this the time for Steve Clarke to select Dominic Hyam not just for the squad, but also for the starting line-up?

Hyam made the squad for the world cup qualifiers away v Denmark & Belarus in September. He wasn’t though selected for the double headers in either October nor November. There are of course other players in contention for the CB spots.

Grant Hanley

Steve Clarke is notoriously loyal to established players in his squad, among whom is the 66 cap Grant Hanley. 34-year-old Hanley in his comeback from a hamstring injury, played 45 mins for Hibs last week in a bounce game v Raith Rovers. Hanley didn’t though make the Hibs squad for the weekend draw v Livingston.

John Souttar

29-year-old John Souttar’s career has been troubled by injuries (sometimes serious injuries, hence his current only 21 full caps, given how highly Clarke seems to rate him). While Souttar has had a couple of spells out in the last 4 months, he is rated 7.0 or higher in 10 of the last 11 Rangers games in which he has played long enough to earn a Flashscore rating. The exception (i.e., 6.7), is the 11th of those games.

Souttar has started on the bench in Rangers’ last 2 games. Souttar & Rangers (like Hanley & Hibs) though, both play in a division ranked significantly lower than that Hyam plays in. In contrast to the division Hyam plays in that Opta currently ranks 9th, the Scots top tier is currently rated at 74.0 and ranked 39th globally.

Halkett & Findlay

That divisional ranking is also a consideration for Hearts’ 1 full cap Stuart Finlay & uncapped Craig Halkett. Finlay & Halkett like Hyam are aged 30. Yet another 30 year old, Liam Lindsay at Preston North End, has largely been a squad player in 2026. Lindsay though did make a return to a starting berth on Saturday, losing 2-0 at Norwich City. Kenny McLean’s goal in that game was not from the half-way line on this occasion. Lindsay remains uncapped.

Jack Hendry

36 cap Jack Hendry plays in a lower ranked division than those who play in Scotland’s top tier. The Saudi Arabian league in which 30-year-old Jack Hendry plays, is rated 74.0 like the Scots top tier. The Saudi league though is ranked a position lower at 40th globally, than the Scots topflight. Hendry is rated 6.5 in Flashscore for this season so far in the league playing for Al-Ettifaq. Hendry like Hanley & Souttar has established incumbency in Clarke’s squad in his favour.

Scott McKenna

Another established incumbent, 29-year-old Scott McKenna (48 caps), being naturally left-sided seems a cert to be squad selected barring injury. The Croatian top tier that McKenna plays in, is rated 77.6 by Opta (15th globally). While Bristol City’s Ross McCrorie has only 1 full cap so far, his positional versatility potentially counts in his favour in Steve Clarke’s mind.

Will Clarke choose Dominic Hyam for the March internationals?

We thus await to see, does Dominic Hyam make Steve Clarke’s soon to be announced next squad? If concerns over the depth of Scotland goalkeeping strength are justified, the stronger the defence the better.
