St Mirren emergency goalkeepers: Scots options for McLeish

Hampden Park, Glasgow.

St Mirren have received extensive coverage re their goalkeeping situation in their Scottish Cup semifinal, extra-time defeat to Celtic. Shamal George missed the semi through injury. Ryan Mullen subbed off injured early in the game, replaced by 17 year old Grant Tamosevicius. Should the Buddies boss, Craig McLeish seek to draft in an emergency loan, Scots goalkeepers are potentially available. None of these below are currently higher than 3rd choice at their respective clubs.

Jordan Archer (Portsmouth, age 33)

Archer almost transferred to Salford last summer. According to Flashscore, Archer has zero 1st team appearances to his name this season and only 1 appearance on the bench (in a 2-1 league cup home defeat to Reading). Of those in this list, Archer is likely most realistic for St Mirren in terms of cost and experience. Archer has previous experience playing on a short-term deal in Scotland. His time at Motherwell in 2020 helped him land a subsequent deal at Middlesbrough. With Archer likely to leave Portsmouth when his contract expires in the summer, putting himself in the shop window by playing for Saints could be ideal for him.

Angus Gunn (Nottingham Forest, Age 30)

At least Gunn actually has 45 minutes of 1st team club football this season (unlike the others in this list). He is 4th choice at Forest. With John Victor injured though, Gunn is currently 3rd choice at Forest after Matz Sels & Stefan Ortega. A loan to Paisley could potentially be very useful for Gunn, for pre-World Cup 1st team action. Gunn may take the view though that being out of the 1st team picture at his club, reduces injury risk before what may well be his career highlight; experiencing World Cup football. If Gunn were to be interested in a loan to Saints, there would be questions re how much St Mirren would have to pay for the services of what to them is a very expensive GK.

Callan McKenna (Bournemouth, Age 19)

Young McKenna is very much part of the Bournemouth development set up rather than 1st team squad. He was though signed by Bournemouth after impressing for Queen’s Park’s 1st team when aged 17. Great experience as it’d be for him at St Mirren, it seems unlikely they would sign such an inexperienced player.

St Mirren have been notified of these options.
