Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi, Verona.

Kieron Bowie background: Raith, Northampton & Fulham

Bowie’s senior football debut was aged 16 with hometown club, Raith Rovers. Consequently, 10 goals in 35 games earned him a July 2020 move to Fulham in West London.

Then, Fulham loaned out Bowie for 1st team experience to Northampton Town. Subsequently, Bowie won promotion in his 1st season there to England’s 3rd tier. Against Lincoln City in his 2nd season at Northampton on loan, he scored the club goal of the season. Marc Leonard‘s one-touch tee-up assisted the “wonderful counter-attacking goal, finished brilliantly by Bowie.” Also, the same match report added, Bowie “curled a wonderful finish into the bottom corner.” Wonderful!

However, Bowie didn’t play any 1st team football for Fulham. Hence to remedy that, he joined Hibernian in the summer of 2024.

Picking out 3 points from Bowie’s numbers:

a) His goal-or-assist every 98 minutes last season, dropped to every 161 minutes this season. That is a significant decrease this season compared to last.

b) Overall in all competitions, Verona have signed someone who contributed a goal or assist every 155 minutes in a season and a 1/2. That is in the division ranked 36th on earth.

c) In 6 games of Hibs UEFA competition, Bowie’s 1 goal & zero assists were from him playing 547 minutes of game time. However, the standard of opposition he played against in Europe, is much more likely nearer to that of Serie A. That is compared to the often relatively weaker opposition he’d face domestically in Scotland. Hence, transferring from the 36th to the 2nd highest ranked division on earth, is a big step up in standard. Specifically among his Hibs goals are 1 in May v Rangers and 1 in a late December at top-of-the-table Hearts; 2 of Scotland’s strongest teams

Numbers don’t tell all the story

Seen Bowie’s Scottish goal of the season contending, 35-yard wonder strike v FK Partizan? It will be long remembered at Easter Road and beyond. The goal was reminiscent of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, backing up outrageous audacity with stunning ability.

Verona scouts of course will have analysed Bowie’s attributes, strong and weak, in great detail. Thus, they have signed him based on his age & what they project as his player ceiling.

Hibs Sporting Director, Malky Mackay, commented on Bowie’s departure, “Kieron has got a great personality and is surprisingly mature for his age, which will stand him in good stead in relocating to Italy and playing in Serie A.”

What can Bowie expect at Verona

Bowie is the 4th Scotsman in the Serie A era to sign for Verona. He has joined a relegation battle, with Verona currently rock bottom of Serie A. For example, they are on an 8-game winless run of 6 defeats and 2 draws. Further, Verona finished 14th last season, and this season are without 20 players who left in the summer. That includes Diego Coppola and Jackson Tchatchoua. The 2 transferred separately for a combined £20 million to the English Premier League (to Brighton and Wolves respectively).

Verona had money to spend on Bowie this January from selling Brazilian forward, Giovane. Specifically, Giovane transferred to join Billy Gilmour and Scott McTominay at Napoli. Furthermore, the Giovane deal is reported potentially worth £20 million including performance-related bonuses.

18 Verona goals from 23 Serie A games so far this season is a pretty clear metric of what Bowie is expected to help with. Current Verona top scorer for this season is 23-year-old Nigerian, Gift Orban. Orban has notched 7 Serie A and 1 Coppa Italia goals so far this season. Further, Verona boss Paolo Zanetti remarked on signing Bowie:

“He’s a physical player with a big presence in the penalty box and with him we can offer us some different solutions.”

Kieron Bowie Verona goals?

As stated earlier, Bowie has been crystal clear he sees going to Italy as helping his cause for World Cup selection. However, Steve Clarke is notoriously loyal to his players (overly so according to some people). Hence, if fit, Che Adams and Lyndon Dykes seem stick-ons to be on the plane. In the era of data-driven decision making, the crucial metric in football still remains goals; Clarke is well aware of that. Hence the door is wide open for those seeking selection.

Adams of course currently plays for Torino in Serie A (barring a last day transfer window exit). Further, Adams is a hard working team player. Even with his nice left-foot finish defeating Lecce 1-0 at the weekend, Adams isn’t a prolific goalscorer. Hence, if Bowie can outscore Adams for the rest of the season, the numbers talk to Clarke on Bowie’s behalf: ‘If he’s the benchmark and you’re picking him, you’ve got to also pick me since I score more regularly at the same high level’. Conversely if Adams maintains his infrequent scoring rate, numbers count against Bowie if he fails to match Adams’ yardstick.

Thus, if Bowie impresses playing in the world’s 2nd highest ranked division, his ‘selectability’ increases for one of the remaining forwards’ places in the squad. How much game time he plays in Italy this season though, remains to be seen. Also, the same goes for how productive he is.

Kieron Bowie Verona gamble

Thus, therein lies Kieron Bowie’s gamble in his quest to be at the 2026 World Cup. Previously at Hibs he played plenty of minutes and was able to impress against often poorer opposition. In contrast at Verona, his challenges are:

a) Getting selected to play from the higher standard of squad at his new club. And;

b) Delivering against stronger in depth domestic opponents than he has previously faced on a regular basis.

Hence, a seat on that plane to America depends on how the Kieron Bowie Verona transfer works out.
